At this I-Construct event Robert Edge will be introducing our speaker, Helen Clements. Helen is the Social Value Manager at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. Morgan Sindall are a leading UK construction and regeneration group.

Helen will be joining us to talk about what social value means in practice. How Morgan Sindall creates social value with their supply chain. And what the Tier 1 contractors expect of their suppliers when it comes to social value.

All I-Construct members are welcome to attend. This event is most suitable for businesses who want to work with Tier 1 contractors. Particularly those who want to apply for work packages over £1m. This is an opportunity for medium-sized construction businesses looking to grow.

Background

The Public Services (Social Value) Act came into force in 2013. The act applies to people who commission public services. It requires buyers to think about a project’s social, economic and environmental benefits. This is also known as social value.

UK government buyers now consider social value impact when awarding contracts. To meet buyer requirements Tier 1 bidders (like Morgan Sindall), must show how they will have a positive impact on the local area. They must show the social, economic and environmental benefits of their plans. These benefits are then compared as part of the bidding process. With social value weighted at 10%.

So, when awarding contracts contribution to social value is very important. For contractors there is growing pressure from shareholders, to behave in a more ethical manner. This is being cascaded through their supply chains.

Morgan Sindall looks at how their activities increase social, economic and environmental wellbeing. This includes contributions from their supply chain partners. Key areas are contribution to community engagement, environmental impacts, employment and skills training. Plus, the supply of local material and labour used in project delivery.
