The Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme has been developed by the UK government to provide access to subsidised broadband installations for businesses that are unable to access a broadband service with a download speed of at least 2 Mb per second and those not benefiting from the superfast broadband rollout.

The scheme will ensure that no business will need to pay more than £400 to access a basic broadband service over a 12 month period. Businesses that are eligible to take advantage of the scheme will be provided with a unique code that will cover most of the cost of the installation and commissioning of a basic broadband service including any necessary equipment.

Value Notes

The scheme provides a subsidy of up to £400 to enable access to an affordable basic broadband service to those unable to achieve broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps.

Who Can Apply

Businesses can take advantage of the scheme if they meet the following three criteria:

• The business is not currently able to access a broadband download speed of at least 2Mb per second.
• There are no alternative affordable broadband services available which would provide a download speed of at least 2Mb per second.
• There are no plans to provide superfast broadband to the applicant’s location within 6 to 12 months of application.

The closing date for applications to the Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme has now been extended until 31 December 2019.

It supports innovation by providing businesses with access to academic expertise, including consultancy and collaborative research through funding opportunities. Backed by £4.7million of Research England’s Connecting Capability Fund, EIRA seeks to drive economic growth and productivity in the region and has support available for businesses of all sizes, from start-ups, to SMEs and larger companies. Innovation Vouchers

Innovation vouchers can provide small or medium-sized business with up to £5k to engage with EIRA expertise, with the opportunity to foster a long-term partnership. Funds pay for academic experts to provide you with tailored expertise. EIRA funds 80% of the total value of innovation vouchers, with companies funding the remaining 20%.

Research and Development Grants

Start-up Microfinance

From across the network, EIRA can place a student or recent graduate within a business based in the East of England as an innovation internship. These internships should offer developmental opportunities across the three key areas of biotechnology, digital creative and artificial intelligence, or support the business with an innovative project. The internships teams from partner institutions can work with businesses to place an intern in an organisation, that can provide valuable work experience to the student and an extra pair of hands on a busy project for the business.

DEFRA’s Forestry Innovation Fund is a nationwide £1 million fund to support schemes that will promote the growth of the forest industry in their region.  The Woodland Creation Planning Grant (WCPG) is financed by this fund.

LATEST NEWS: The application threshold has been reduced to 10 hectares as of 31 July 2017, read on for more information.

What is eligible?

Proposals need to meet some basic criteria, being at least 10 hectares in area and showing potential to benefit the forestry sector in the long-term through the provision of timber or other wood products. In particular, at least 70% of the species in the  proposed new woodland must be productive, and at least one woodland block must be 10 ha or more in size, with any additional blocks being at least 5ha in size. This means if your application is less than 15 ha in total it must be formed of a single woodland block. We will accept applications that span multiple land holdings, though the grant is only available on land in England.

Existing native, semi-natural habitats are likely to have a high value for biodiversity, and for landscape and visual interest. This will need to be compared with the value of new woodland. Moreover there is a specific presumption against the conversion of priority habitats, such as deep peat or active raised bogs. Where the proposed planting is on semi-natural habitat the presumption is that the planting will be restricted to native broadleaved species or it will be retained as open ground adding to the forest mosaic.

What is the process?

Applicants are required to complete the Application Form and return it to the grant scheme administrator: WCPG@forestry.gsi.gov.uk. The form asks for an outline of the planting proposals.

Where we are satisfied the proposal meets the eligibility criteria we will offer the Stage 1 grant within ten working days of receiving the application.

You should refer to the Practice Guide on Design techniques for forest management planning. This provides guidance on the design process which WCPG’s stages support.

Stage 1 involves a desk-based data gathering exercise to identify all of the constraints and issues that might affect the planting proposal. The checks that must be made to receive the payment are set out in the Stage 1 Checklist. Stage 1 should also identify any high sensitivity issues which may require an Extraordinary Payment and other analysis, information and surveys that will be required to receive the Stage 2 payment.

Once the Stage 1 work is completed and has been submitted to us for payment we will decide if the proposal warrants a Stage 2 payment. If we agree there is a need for an Extraordinary Payment, for example for a Landscape Visual Impact Assessment or Critical Loads Assessment, this will be confirmed with the applicant and payment will be made when we are satisfied that the additional assessment/survey has been completed to an adequate standard.

The Stage 2 payment supports the critical part of the process: the analysis of how the constraints and opportunities identified at Stage 1 and during the Stage 2 field survey influence the woodland’s design. Payment of the Stage 2 is paid on our approval of a Site Appraisal Plan, and a draft UKFS compliant Woodland Creation Design Plan (WCDP) that shows how the constraints and opportunities have been evaluated and have informed the WCDP (and, where necessary, a Phase 2 Habitat survey). The minimum criteria these plans must cover are set out in the Stage 2 Checklist.

Please note our approval of the draft WCDP does not infer automatic approval of the planting scheme which will still be subject to the Environmental Impact Assessment (Forestry) (England and Wales) Regulations 1999 and consultation.

The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) run by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) is open nationally to businesses and residents (with businesses) on a first come first served basis. The scheme is aiming to increase access to full fibre broadband networks across the UK capable of gigabit speeds (1000Mps or 1Gbps), regardless of whether or not superfast broadband is already available.

Gigabit vouchers can be used by small and medium-sized businesses and the local communities surrounding them to contribute to the installation cost of a gigabit capable connection. Businesses can access up to £2,500 each and residents can access £500 each, if part of a business-led community group.

The aim of the scheme is to reduce the cost of eligible electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen vans.

The grant is part of a wider initiative – also including the development of low-emission vehicle technologies, establishment of a service infrastructure and provision of charging stations for electric vehicles – to promote the uptake of next generation, ultra-low emission vehicle technologies. By stimulating the uptake of electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen powered vehicles, the grant will contribute to reducing carbon and pollution emissions by road vehicles, helping to meet national targets for carbon reduction, and decrease the future manufacturing and purchase cost of ultra-low emission vehicles.

Grant assistance is available to cover up to 20% of project costs up to a maximum of £8,000.

Thurrock shop front improvement scheme offers grants to improve shop fronts in priority areas.

Businesses and owners of vacant retail units can apply for a grant of up to £3,000 towards external renovation or improvement of their premises.

The scheme aims to improve shop fronts as a way of supporting the growth of local businesses, improving the local environment and raising the image of the area amongst local residents and visitors.

The scheme is funded directly from the £100,000 High Street Innovation Fund awarded to us by the Department for Communities and Local Government to reduce the level of vacant properties in the borough.

Several areas in the borough have been particularly affected by a reduced level of private investment and high levels of retail unit vacancy. This scheme is available both to existing independent businesses and owners of vacant units that are located within these central retail areas:

South East Creative, Cultural and Digital Support (SECCADS) is a programme of support for the creative, cultural and digital sectors across Thurrock, Essex, Kent, and East Sussex.

SECCADS has received £2.578 million of funding from the European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds growth programme for 2014 to 2020. This will be match-funded with £2.578 million from a partnership of private and public sector sources.

About the programme

Between March 2019 and December 2020, the programme will help more than 370 companies and sole-traders with business support or grants, giving a £2.5 million boost to the creative economy in the south east of England.

SECCADS offers average grants of between £1,000 and £3,000 to cover up to 35% of project costs. Costs could include; equipment, business development, purchasing software etc.

The remaining 65% of project funding must come from private sources – for example, organisational profits, crowd-funding, trusts, foundations, a secured bank loan or personal contributions.

The project offers free workshops with experts to help companies explore how to make their data work for them better. Grants are also on offer with a funding contribution of 40% up to a maximum of £60,000 to implement a data led solution.

Tilbury CLLD is part funded by the European Structural and Investment Fund (ESIF). The project will run until December 2022. Grant funding has been made available to the project from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which forms part of the ESIF fund.

Support available:

• Grants between £1 and £500,000

Grants and loans to enable organisations in England to introduce business models and processes which make more efficient use of material resources. Examples include product reuse, repair and upgrading services (eg through leasing), and materials recovery and reuse by the manufacturer.

Textiles, electricals and furniture are the priority materials to reduce their environmental impacts, the quantity of products going to waste and the UK’s reliance on the resources required to make these products. However WRAP will consider applications of other materials that also demonstrate significant environmental benefits.

For businesses interested in re-use and repair of textiles, electricals and furniture specifically, the following support is available:

• Grants of up to £50,000 eg for equipment
• Business development support, eg marketing and financial planning
• Loans of between £100,000 and £1 million.

Who can apply: The Loan Fund operates in England and is open to organisations operating in England and business models. Applicants may include businesses, social enterprises and local authorities. Applications will be invited in phases for different types of activity.
